Susanne Kaiser
Biography
Susanne Kaiser is an independent tech consultant from Hamburg, Germany, supporting organizations with building socio-technical systems. She is passionate about connecting the dots between Wardley Mapping, Domain-Driven Design, and Team Topologies as a holistic approach to designing and building adaptive systems for a fast flow of change. Susanne previously worked as a startup CTO and has a background in computer sciences and experience in software development and software architecture since 2002. She is the author of the upcoming book "Adaptive Systems with Domain-Driven Design, Wardley Mapping, and Team Topologies: Architecture for Flow" (Addison-Wesley Signature Series (Vernon), 2024).

Team Topologies in Practice: A Journey of Re-Teaming Using Architecture for Flow
Talk
In this talk, we'll share our hands-on experience applying Architecture for Flow (combining Wardley Mapping, DDD, and Team Topologies) to transform a growing software organization. Pirate Ship, a growing tech company, faced common scaling challenges: teams growing too large, unclear ownership of shared components, and dependencies blocking the flow.
Working with development teams across multiple workshops and iterations, we established stream-aligned teams with well-defined ownership boundaries.
We'll demonstrate how we used participatory approaches to map stream-aligned teams to identified bounded contexts and introduced a platform team. Through concrete examples, we'll show how combining software architecture with team topology patterns led to sustainable flow optimization.
Key Takeaways:
- A practical blueprint for participatory team reorganization combining Wardley Mapping, Domain-Driven Design, and Team Topologies
- Proven workshop formats for domain discovery and team self-selection
- How to use consent-based decision making and self-selection to drive sustainable change
- Strategies for evolving from shared components to platform teams

Optimizing for a Fast Flow of Value with Adaptive, Socio-Technical Systems
Talk
In today’s fast-paced business environment, it’s essential for organizations to adapt and evolve continuously to remain competitive and relevant in the market. Organizations need to create systems that align with user needs (effectiveness) while ensuring rapid value delivery (efficiency).
This talk explores the synergy of Wardley Mapping, Domain-Driven Design (DDD), and Team Topologies as a holistic toolkit for building adaptive, socio-technical systems optimized for a fast, sustainable flow of value and feedback.
This talk takes you on a journey from mapping the current business landscape, identifying and unlocking blockers to flow from various perspectives to aligning teams, including evolving their interactions with the system and strategy we plan.
